Maximo Laura is an internationally renowned, award winning fiber artist who works primarily with natural, renewable alpaca fibers. Each piece is created from Alpaca fibres, with different colours of thread expertly blended together. What might look like one thread is usually more than six threads woven together to create the perfect tint. His designs are first drawings, then transferred to the loom where they are handwoven into gorgeous, high quality works of fine, contemporary tapestry art. Laura's vibrant, modern and uniquely personal aesthetic is blended with Native Andean American images and iconography indicative of his indigenous ancestry and scholarship of ancient Andean cultures and textile history. The tapestries can take anywhere from a few weeks to a year to finish depending on their complexity and size. The final result is truly breathtaking. While traditional weaving can look quite one-dimensional, Laura manages to bring light, perspective, and huge amounts of energy to his work. Check Our Gallery for larger photographs.
